The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK Government created scheme which provides generous grants to encourage homeowners to replace outdated, fossil fuelled heating systems with modern, lower carbon alternatives such as air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps. The reason? To reduce reliance on fossil fuels in more homes across the country, in turn minimising CO2 emissions and hopefully allowing the UK to meet its goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

So, let’s talk money!

If you’re eligible, you could receive £7,500 towards your new low carbon heating system, this is either an air or ground source heat pump. You don’t need to formally apply, your selected installer will know if you meet the scheme's criteria and they will deduct the grant amount upfront before providing you with a quote. Once the installer has applied and been provided with the funds, they can begin the installation! The BUS scheme is open homeowners and small business owners across the UK, eligibility will require:

Full ownership of the property.
A traditional, fossil fueled heating system - like a gas boiler.
A valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) - this will need to be no more than ten
years old.
A property with a maximum installation capacity of 45kWth.
The installer to be MCS accredited.

What is the closing date for applications?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) closes on the 31st of December, 2027.

How can I check if my installer is MCS accredited?

You can easily check if your prospective installer is MCS accredited by visiting the official MCS Find an Installer page.

Can I still apply if I’ve already received other government funding?

Yes, you can. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs separately from other government funding for energy efficiency upgrades like insulation, doors, or windows.

Are there any post-installation requirements?

Nope! The grant does not require anything from you post-installation. General maintenance is required to keep the system running efficiently, but this is solely the homeowner's responsibility.

Is there a time limit once the installer receives the funds?

Yes, the installation must be completed within a set timeframe once the installer receives the grant. For an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), this is three months, and for a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP), it’s six months.

Will I have to fill in a load of forms?

After moving into a new house with ASHP we were struggling to get the house to maintain heat especially in Winter with UFH.
This resulted in high bills and ASHP working around the clock to get to our req. temp. Sparta Mech looked at the manifold unit, adjusted pressure & thermostat, reconfig the Mitsibushi Ecodan settings for heating. They explained what was required and why we were doing it. So we now have a better understanding on how to manage it going forward.

After our MVHR unit broke down, Spartamech were a great help. Jason identified the spec of our existing unit, supplied easily comparable specs for several alternatives, gave advice and then ordered the unit we selected and arranged fitting very quickly. Then we had Chris come out to fit the unit. He made it through awful icy conditions on the lanes to get to us and fitted the unit very efficiently.
