🔥 What is a Combi Boiler?
A combination (combi) boiler is the most popular type in UK homes. It heats water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap, so you don't need a separate hot water cylinder or cold water tank.
You probably have a combi if:
- You don't have a hot water tank/cylinder in an airing cupboard
- You don't have a water tank in your loft
- Hot water comes out quickly when you turn the tap on
🔥 What is a System Boiler?
A system boiler works with a hot water cylinder (usually in an airing cupboard) to store hot water. It doesn't need a tank in the loft.
You probably have a system boiler if:
- You have a hot water cylinder (tall tank) in an airing cupboard
- You DON'T have a cold water tank in your loft
- The boiler is sealed and pressurised
🔥 What is a Heat Only / Regular Boiler?
A heat only boiler (also called a regular or conventional boiler) works with both a hot water cylinder AND a cold water tank in the loft.
You probably have a heat only boiler if:
- You have a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard
- You have a cold water tank in your loft
- It's an older heating system
What is a Flue?
The flue is the pipe that carries waste gases from your boiler safely outside your home. It's usually a white or silver pipe that exits through an external wall or roof.
Look for a pipe coming out of the wall near where your boiler is located - that's your flue!
