Government heat pump grants are available for property owners who are upgrading gas and oil boilers, LPG systems as well as electric heating systems. For off grid property owners in Hereford, the Government has announced grants up to £9,000, expected in July 2026 for homes heated by oil boilers and LPG systems but the scheme is awaiting final confirmation.

Government Grants for Heat Pumps & Cooling Systems (2026 Update)

Customers can access the grant through installers like us with the grant deducted from final quotation. If it’s time to swap your old boiler for a low carbon heating system, Sparta Mech could help with both the heat pump installation and grants. To access heat pump grants, homeowners must work with MCS certified installers like Sparta Mech.

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The BUS is a government grant in the UK to help homeowners reduce the cost of installing a new low carbon heating system. There are various amounts of funding available depending on the heating system you go for.

Current live grants available include:

  • Air source heat pumps - grant available £7,500
  • Ground Source Heat Pumps - grant available £7,500
  • Biomass Boilers -grant available £5,000

If you live in a self built home, you might qualify for grants but this will be subject to ownership and scheme criteria. While we want to support a wide range of local residents in Hereford, we do need to mention that standard developed built new homes are not eligible for BUS.

Can I access Air to Air Heat Pump grants?

Although grants for air to air heat pumps, also referred to as air conditioning, are not available yet, they will be in the near future. You could expect a grant of £2,500 which applies to systems used as a primary heating source, although a separate system is required for hot water. Air to Air heat pumps warm the air inside a property rather than a source of water in radiation or underfloor heating.

Sparta Mech is excited for potential Air to Air Heat pump customers as this is the first time that air conditioning systems will be made eligible for government funding.

How do I know if a grant is available and if I’m eligible?

While we do our best to give you current information and expert advice, we must stress that grant values and eligibility are subject to Government policy and may fluctuate without notice. A few of the schemes we’ve mentioned are not fully implemented so there could be additional changes at rollout. Confirmation of eligibility is finalised during the application under BUS. The team must emphasize that Sparta Mech Ltd accepts no liability for changes to Government funding or eligibility criteira. We stress that customers should rely on formal scheme guidance at the time of application.
