Air Source Heat Pump Installer Hereford
Is an ASHP right for me?
An ASHP offers a host of benefits but however not all homes will have adequate infrastructure to home one. An ASHP is best suited for homeowners who:
- Want to lower energy bills and reduce carbon footprint.
- Have a well-insulated home.
- Use a compatible heating system (ideally underfloor heating or large radiators).
- Have space for the outdoor unit with sufficient airflow.
- Have a reliable electricity supply.
An ASHP is less suitable for homeowners who:
- Have poor insulation (older homes built before 1990 tend to struggle with insulation).
- Rely on small, incompatible radiators.
- Don’t have adequate space indoors & out to house the unit.
Here at Sparta Mech, Hereford we know this is quite a bit of information to digest - don’t worry, if you’re unsure whether your property is fit to house an ASHP just give us a call. The first thing we do on all ASHP related projects is visit your home during which we’ll advise you whether an ASHP is right for you. If we determine your home is unsuitable, we’ll always offer a possible alternative or suggestions on how you may be able to make your home right for an ASHP - for example improving your home's insulation.
Why is insulation important for an ASHP?
A well insulated home is crucial for a successful ASHP - here’s why:
- Better at keeping heat inside your home.
- Helps the heat pump work more efficiently.
- Lowers your energy bills.
- Makes your home feel warmer and more comfortable.
In short, high performing insulation ensures you get the most value from your ASHP unit.
Poor insulation Vs. Good insulation
- Poor insulation: Heat escapes quickly > the pump works harder > higher bills, uneven warmth.
- Good insulation: Heat stays in > the pump runs smoothly > lower bills, consistent warmth and comfort.
ASHP - Making use of UK Government grants
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS):
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK Government grant that helps homeowners replace old fossil-fuel heating systems with low-carbon options like air source and ground source heat pumps. Its aim is to cut CO2 emissions, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support the UK’s target of reaching net zero by 2050.
Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, eligible homeowners can get £7,500 towards an air source heat pump. You don’t apply directly - your installer checks eligibility, applies on your behalf, and deducts the grant upfront from your quote. You’ll need to own the property, currently use a fossil-fuel system (like a gas boiler), hold a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), have a system size under 45kWth, and use an MCS-accredited installer.
MCS-accredited Installer in Hereford
Sparta Mech are MCS-accredited meaning our work (inc. ASHP installs) have been assessed and deemed as safe and successful. Being MCS-accredited also means we have capability to make use of the BUS scheme, if a customer is deemed eligible.
