What is an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump (ASHP) is a system which absorbs heat from the air outside a property. This heat can then be used to heat inside through traditional heating methods like radiators and underfloor heating systems. It can also be used in conjunction with a hot water cylinder providing hot water. You’re probably thinking… “we live in the UK, it’s freezing?” Surprisingly air source heat pumps can extract heat from climates as low as minus twenty-five degrees Celsius!

How do air source heat pumps work?

Air source heat pumps use a similar technique as fridges and freezers, just in reverse. Instead of keeping air cool, it heats. As the pump pulls air in from outside, a refrigerant fluid is heated. As the liquid warms it turns into gas. The heat is then condensed increasing its overall temperature. This warm air is then used to heat your home or business efficiently. Once the heat from the gas has dispersed, the gas cools down and returns to liquid…then the cycle repeats. The whole process runs solely on electricity and is extremely efficient.

Types of air source heat pumps

There are actually two types of air source heat pumps. The standard air to water system as outlined above works in the same way as a wet central heating system. An air-to-air system uses fans to circulate the warm air created – though they are considered less efficient.

Benefits of air source heat pumps

  • Environmentally friendly: An air source heat pump will significantly reduce your properties CO2 level which in turn will improve surrounding air quality.
  • Solar compatibility: Some models are compatible with solar PV systems.
  • Save through government grants: Homeowners in the UK can benefit from government grants of £7,500!

Is an air source heat pump right for me?

Unfortunately, an air source heat pump will not be suitable for all properties. You’ll need sufficient space and access to successfully install an air source heat pump. Your property must also be very well insulated – older properties may need a higher level of insulation before installation can begin. It’s also worth noting that installing an air source heat pump may require changes to your radiators and central heating pumps. Rest assured though, with SpartaMech Mechanical services we will talk you through the whole process in detail, so you know exactly what to expect.

Maintaining air source heat pumps

A well-maintained air source heat pump should last you at least twenty years. The grill which extracts air from outside must remain clear, free from any debris. Things like leaves can restrict air flow, decreasing efficiency. After installing your brand-new air source heat pump we’ll run through exactly what type of maintenance is required and how often this should be scheduled.

Installing an air source heat pumps requires advanced knowledge and skill. You should ensure your installer is fully qualified and certified with Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Here at SpartaMech Mechanical Services we are fully qualified to fit a wide range of air source heat pumps for homes and business alike. Are you based in Herefordshire?
